PT.35 PROPS AND COSTUMES FOR THE CHARACTERS

20170104_151322I decided that the group and myself should discuss what each character should wear and keeping to the time period as well. Above I said about how the Fath’s make up should be bright lipstick as well as her waring a black dress as that would be what she would be wearing in that time period and Kasia decided to make her more lady like she would have a purse  and jeweller. For the Bartender I decided that he should wear black trousers and a white shirt s well as black shoes as this means he looks like the average bartender in that time period as well as looking smart which a majority of bartenders were and still are. The detective I decided should be the typical looking detective of the 1950’s with the long coat and what is knowing now a days as the ‘detective hat’. For the extras we decided on those outfits so the blend into the time period as well as not being to out there that would distract the audience from the main characters.

Above is the list of Props we will need for our film to make it more realistic and believable. I decided that we as a group definitely need something that would look like a realistic cigarette as well as something looking like realistic drugs. So I decided the closet that we would get to these things is Paper as the cigarette and flour or baking soda as the drug looking substance. It is easy enough to get these props from either tesco or online or from other people.

PT.34 CASTING FOR FILM

20170104_151249

Now getting closer to the filming and its the last few lessons before the end of term I decided as a group we needed to discuss and decide on who we are going to cast. After  myself and Kasia doing some discussion on who to cast we decided on the people’s names above. The reason we decided on these people were because..

1)They are are friends and so they are very accessible

2) The main actors and actresses are people who are really good at drama and are good with their facial expressions and body language making it more realistic

and 3) They are all very sensible and will do what we say

After deciding on the actors and actresses I decided to create a group chat with them and ask to see if they wanted to be involved below you will see from the messages after some explaining and convincing they were all willing to do it.

Below are the faces of these actors and actresses who are willing to be involved and a bit of description on them and what they will be doing.

This is Helen who will either be Faith Willow our main girl or an extra who will be in the bar. Helen takes Theatre Studies and is a very strong actress who can take on any role and express it really well and that is the reason why we have considered for her to play this character.

Above is Ethan . Ethan will be playing our detective in the film. Although Ethan does not take drama he is a pass student of drama and so knows his techniques and Ethan takes his drama very seriously and is a good actor with good facial expressions and body language.  He is willing to work with us.

This is Vedannsh, Vedannsh is part of my media team and he wanted to be an actor in this so we decided that he would be the actor who is the bartender and “deals the drugs” to Faith (Helen).

Above are our extras which will be in the background of the bar. These are our friends who are willing to help out.

As you can see from above the Casting did change slightly. For instance we decided Helen would be the main girl and that Ethan would be the Detective. For the extras unfortunately  Declan, Joshua, Craig, Nanouri and Lucy were unable to attend the shooting nights due to other commitments. This was a slight advantage as the people who we did have made the bar feel less crowded and so the focus point would be more on the main actors and actresses and not the extras in the background.

PT.33 RISK ASSESSMENT

Above is the Risk Assessment done by Sophia we decided to make it formal as is a vital part of filming to be aware of the risks around you we did this on the first lesson after getting the assignment of doing pt31-33. Knowing that we had to do the risk assessment I decided on getting the group together and explain what we had to do as some did not understand what the risk assessment was. We decided on sitting down and I started to come up with Ideas on what could be a risk things from chairs where you can fall off from, Doors that can swing open and close really fast and can hit you and hurt you or can hit the camera and damage the camera as well as wet floors where you can slip and fall. Kasia also came up with the idea about the camera hitting the door as I never thought about the equipment getting damaged. To avoid having these risks we will make sure the floor is dry by mopping up if there is any water make sure we are careful with the doors and chairs when using them.  As mentioned before the reason why we are doing this is because this is crucial to our filming to be aware that there could be injuries if we aren’t aware of our surrounding risks.

PT.32 LOCATION AND PERMISSION

After looking back at our pitch we decided to keep with the location as g-house sixth form centre and also the surrounding grounds around g-house. While all of us were together in the classroom  I decided that we need to get permission on using the sixth form centre and so Vedannsh offered to email Mr Georgeson to get the permission on using it. We decided on the G-house sixth form centre because it has the bar area and we need that because our story is based in the bar the surrounding areas is for when she runs out the bar and hides behind the tree which is just outside the bar.

The Email for Mr Georgeson and his reply giving us permission to use it.

After getting the permission to use it I decided on that we need to get the photos of the area where we are shooting in so with that I told Sophia,  Kasia and Vedanssh the exact places to take places and so  Vedannsh and Kasia offered to go during one of lessons to take the photos on their phones to take pictures of the location we will be using. We took photos to get a clear idea of where we will be shooting problems we might face and how to resolve them before we start shooting.  Below are the photos they took.

PT.31 Shot List and Shooting Script

20161208_103150

Above is a shot list I created this week for my group for our film (which we are doing after christmas) so we know exactly what to film and how to film it. This List involves all the major details and minor details on what we will be filming to make it a success. I added in the movement of the camera and the camera angles which I will be using for each shot so I can get the best possible picture I would like for our film noir. Having a shot list means hopefully the filming will be a lot smoother and we won’t get confused on what to film next we will just follow the shot list.  Overall I feel this list is extremely useful and important. It will also make our overall final edit look efficient because using it shows we have planned out our ideas and it shows that we can turn it into what will be our film noir making it look  more realistic and naturalistic as well as classic which will fit in with the time period of film noir.

Above is Our Shooting Script which was done by Kasia. Myself and Kasia looked through the characters and discussed what they would wear and who would look more dominant in a situation. We did this so we have an idea on what they will wear what the angle shots will be on them to show if they have more dominance than the other person we also added in what they wear to understand their personality more but also to set the time period which of course is the 1950’s. The music shows the time period as well but also it could show their personality being mysterious and cautious.

PT.30 StoryBoard Animation

After looking at our storyboard we decided that we would make an animated storyboard of it all. Over the past few days I was the one who did all the drawing (even though it isn’t the best but hey not everyone is an artist) of the scenes to make it look clearer and Sophia was the one who edited the video and added in the sound as well she did this through iMovie and then after the group looked at it we then uploaded it to YouTube. We did an animation storyboard because we needed to know what exactly will be done in the film and how and it is really important to do this in the film industry as people have a clearer idea of what is going to happen and how as well as the sound that is going to be used.

PT.28 Similar Sound

20161203_191837
This is a photo of me analysing the sound in the opening of They Live By Night

Above is both the Film Opening for They Live By Night (can be found on Youtube)  and also my analysing of the sound within the Movie. I decided to look at Similar sounds to the movie i’m making because I want to get an idea on why a lot of film Noir films were famous and it is usually down to the music and so i decided to look at the sound in this movie. What I like about this is that it has an intense soundtrack making the audience want to watch more to find out what is going to happening next which I feel would be good for my groups work to have as well.

Thinking about the sort of sound that my group will have to include into our opening is very important  because that is what makes a successful film noir. So I know as well that sound is important because it can build tension and set the scene and we also know what kind of sound levels we should have.

I would like our film to look as classic and original and involve music that will  fit the time period  more specifically. In the opening that I have chosen  ‘They Live By Night’ in this film they have an orchestra (strings, horns, trumpets and drums)  for dramatic effect keeping the audience intrigued the thumping of the drums i feel represent the tension of what is happening in the scene and what is about to happen next.  In ‘They Live By Night’ the music is non-diegetic After looking at a lot of other film noir openings a majority of them have non-diegetic sound in them so  I think my group should use this in our film noir.

PT.29 The Sound we are going to use

20161203_160842.jpg

After discussing about our storyline we decided as a group what to use for sound in the movie. During our class time in the classroom we decided as a group to go find some music individually (to get more variety and to find more)  and find music that would fit well with our film that will keep the audience watching. We decided to look up some Jazz music and also some intense jazz music and also relaxing jazz music to make our audience feel emotion. After finding some music from freeplaymusic.com and from YouTube we wrote them down and listened to them all.

Above is what we have decided on to be the music in the film. After much discussion and debating we decided to go with a soundtrack rather than using any foley songs because we thought it would attract the audience more and intrigued them more to watch it. We choose Sophia’s music because it is very much like the 1950’s type of sound and that is when our movie is set in so it will make it feel more naturalistic. The music is called Noire #1 and it is from Youtube and is also copyright free. Personally I feel this music we chosen  makes the opening flow and also the music links in well with the actions of what the characters will be doing.

pt.27 Storyboard

I decided to make a storyboard of our film talking about the camera movement, lighting, sound and a description on what is going on with each shot. After my group not managing to make it to the agreeable time which was planned on Saturday Afternoon during when we all had a free. I decided to take on the task and make it myself as my group didn’t come and we were already close to the deadline of the submission of this point. The reason I made this so when it comes to the actual film I will know exactly what to film and at what camera angle, etc. This will be very useful because it will help me and make my film opening more successful. I mention the places we will be shooting such as g-house, sixth form centre at the bar area and also the surrounding grounds round g-house.

25. STORYLINE OF THE MOVIE

The photos above show my groups Storyline we discussed in class what we wanted and i was the one who wrote it out. We decided as it is getting closer to the filming stage that we should have an idea on what exactly we will be filming After talking and some discussion I decided in putting the idea forward of making a Treatment/Storyline of what we will be doing and what our film is about. We did this because it will help us to get more organised on what we will need to do. We decided to get it down on paper because it will be easier instead of remembering what had to be done and what it was about we put down all the things ranging from the genre of movie to the characters and their background, to the outline and cast of the movie this is to make our film a more successful one. In this I did the outline of the film as well as giving each character their background story and the group agreeing to it, i also came up with the names for the bartender, the woman and the Detective with Sophia. I also came up with the title of the film trying to resemble it to an actual film noir movie so it doesn’t look to modern and fits the time range of film noir. I also wrote down the requirements and resources of what needed to be done and i also wrote down the visual, editing and the setting and what needed to be included for them. Kasia and myself were the ones who decided on costume for the film as well.
